Note that shipping on most ukuleles (no case or other accessories) to anywhere in the USA (except Alaska and Hawaii) is typically $15 via UPS. Or do you belong to an organized ukulele club? Have your club president contact me for discount pricing benefits. I do not carry most of these items in inventory and typically acquire them directly from Kala as orders are received. FYI, the ukulele, though uniquely Hawaiian, is actually derived from the Portuguese cavaquinho, brought to Hawaii by Portuguese immigrants who came to work in the sugar and pineapple plantations around 1879. The Hawaiians quickly adapted them to their own musical genre, calling them "ukulele" - which means "jumping flea" in Hawaiian - due to their lively tone. The cavaquinho is still skillfully made and played today in many Latin American and European countries and there are a number of other variations, such as the Spanish requinto. Kala ukuleles, especially the tenor and baritone models, have a strong resemblance in body shape to the Brazilian cavaquinho.

Kala ukuleles are not made in Hawaii, rather in a climate that is more like North America. If you've never been to Hawaii, be aware it is quite warm and humid (I lived there for 3 years and I can vouch that it is true!). When a ukulele that has been in that climate is shipped to northern climes, the differences in temperature and humidity can be quite significant. Unless you have a home that replicates the climate of Hawaii, a uke that comes from there can ultimately develop cracks and warping. Just something to think about...

Also called the Mimosa or Shower Tree, these tropical trees are cousins of the Hawaiian Koa tree. They have gorgeous striped patterns of light and dark brown and have a deep, colorful tone that match their visual beauty. These solid wood ukes come sized in Soprano, Concert, and custom Tenor with a slotted headstock. They are trimmed with Rosewood edge binding and classic herringbone purfling. Custom position markers accent the fretboard. The Soprano has classic friction-style tuners. The Concert comes with chrome die-cast tuners with black buttons and the Tenor has Vintage geared chrome tuners. The ukes come with a Rosewood fingerboard and bridge and an Ebony nut and saddle.

Kala's solid Lacewood ukuleles are an exciting release that offer high-end style and features at a very affordable price. Lacewood is a striking wood that has a unique marbled grain pattern with darker markings over a light honey color grain with almost a 3-D look. The wood has streaks of curved red lines running through it that really are set off with the red and black purfling around the edge of the uke. Custom position markers accent the fretboard. All of the ukes have a solid Spruce top. The Soprano has classic friction-style tuners. The Concert and Tenor come with chrome die-cast tuners with black buttons. The ukes come with a Rosewood fingerboard and bridge and an Ebony nut and saddle.

Kala's uBass, is an exciting instrument for Kala in collaboration with Luthier Owen Holt at world famous Road Toad Music in San Jose, CA.  It offers high-end style and features at a very affordable price.  This unique ukulele produces phenomenal bass overtones and low end.  The organic sounding uBass not only sounds great and plays extremely well, but has the versatility of standard size basses for sound quality and playability. The electronics are Shadow SH-064 piezo with four individual crystals set in a compensated saddle (as used in my custom made semi-hollow body bass uke).  Note that this uke is intended to be played through a standard bass amp, NOT an acoustic amp, and sounds best when amplified - but I find it fun to just jam without the amp. The headstock has both the Kala logo and Road Toad inlaid abalone logo.  Gloss black custom-made Hipshot Ultralight bass tuners (on uBass only, not uBass2). The uke pictured is the fretted version  It's 1-13/16" at the nut and has a 20" scale length. Tuned EADG like the big basses. Extremely limited availability (see below), in either fretted or fretless versions (be sure to specify).

Mark my words, these instruments are going to become hot collector's items in the future. So order now to get one. I had a fretted model in stock and it was a blast to play - you won't believe how rich the bass tones are from this small instrument. The pictures above don't do it justice, the mahogany wood is darker and with nicer grain.

Coming soon, Kala introduced a solid body uBass prototype at the 2011 NAMM Show. It will be built in the USA by Road Toad and offer a variety of options and colors. Retail prices are estimated to be from $1200 to $1300 USD. My prices will be significantly less. Projected availability is May, 2011. I have ordered a low serial number solid body uBass for my personal use around that time and will let you know how it feels and sounds. Check back frequently.

International customers, you are responsible for any customs fees or tariffs.  Include detailed shipping address and phone number when responding to the PayPal invoice as the USPS customs form REQUIRES your phone number in addition to a full address.  Note that since I ship primarily by USPS International Priority to save on shipping costs, once it leaves the USA I cannot track it.  If you need tracking info, specify UPS shipping instead, though it may be more expensive.  Residents of certain European countries and South America: based on my experience, you can expect delays of several months in receipt of your order.  If your order does not arrive in a timely manner please let me know, but be aware that no action can be taken until 30 days after the item(s) were shipped.  If you do not receive your order, please do not wait much longer than 30 days to inform me or the package will be impossible to track.  If you're in a hurry you might want to consider shipment by Global Express Mail, but that adds a significant amount to the shipping costs and is not available to every location in those countries.  Sorry, but there's really nothing I can do about the delays otherwise.  I will confirm the shipping costs before processing your order.  Please note that if you choose this option it is most economical to order more than one item and have them shipped together.
